Welcome to Ecuador! Get ready for a unique and adventure-filled experience in the charming city of Quito. Upon your arrival, your IB host will warmly greet you and accompany you to your hotel, where you can unwind and enjoy a peaceful afternoon before we start exploring this amazing city the following day.
Enjoy a day filled with history and beauty as you explore the city of Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Start your tour by visiting the impressive Basilica of the National Vow, a prime example of neo gothic architecture in Ecuador. Admire the detailed stone carvings on its exterior, and once inside, be amazed by the 24 chapels adorned with intricate designs.
Next, take a stroll through the lively Plaza Grande, also known as the Independence Plaza, surrounded by the Quito Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the municipal building. Be sure to stop by the Church of the Society of Jesus, famous for its opulent, completely golden interior. The last stop of your tour will take you to the Virgin of Quito viewpoint, atop the Panecillo Hill, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the city and, if the weather permits, the stunning Avenue of the Volcanoes.
Later, we’ll head north, about 15 kilometers from Quito, to visit the famous Middle of the World monument. This landmark honors the French scientists who, in the 1830s, conducted vital studies to determine the shape of our planet. Here, you’ll have the chance to stand with one foot in each hemisphere of the Earth. You’ll also visit the Intiñan Solar Museum, where you can engage in fascinating scientific experiments, like balancing an egg on a nail or losing weight in an instant. After this fascinating journey to the center of the world, we’ll take you back to your hotel to rest.
Today, we invite you to delve into the heart of Ecuadorian culture, starting in Otavalo, home to the largest indigenous market in Ecuador and one of the most famous in Latin America. Take the opportunity to stroll through its colorful and lively stalls, where you can find traditional crafts and savor delicious local street food.
On the way, we’ll make a charming stop in Cayambe, known for its stunning rose plantations. Here, you’ll learn about Ecuador’s floral industry and have the chance to admire fields filled with over 300 varieties of roses, a visual spectacle of colors and fragrances.
Later, we’ll head to the picturesque town of Peguche, where a family of weavers will showcase their art. Through their traditional looms, you’ll learn about the ancient techniques used to create vibrant textiles from local plants.
For lunch, we’ll enjoy a typical Ecuadorian meal, full of authentic flavors. Afterward, we’ll head to Cotacachi, famous for its exquisite leather crafts, before visiting the stunning volcanic lake Cuicocha. You’ll have the chance to walk along its trails, and if you wish, embark on a boat ride on the lake to enjoy breathtaking views. At the end of the day, we’ll head back to our hotel to relax and unwind after a day full of new experiences.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, your adventure will begin as you head towards Mashpi Lodge, located in the northwest of Quito. Upon arrival, you’ll settle into your room, and shortly after, a lodge naturalist will warmly welcome you and give you an introduction to the marvelous cloud forest surrounding you, as well as the conservation efforts underway. Together, you’ll plan the exciting activities for your stay, with helpful tips on making the most of your experience in this unique environment.
After a lunch filled with fresh, local flavors, your exploration will begin with the Napa Trail, a special area where the forest is regrowing large areas of vegetation. This trail, with its incomparable beauty, offers an opportunity to learn about ecological regeneration processes and the importance of conserving the Chocó region, a true natural paradise.
In the evening, if you wish, you can attend an interesting lecture presented by one of the lodge’s naturalists or resident biologists. They will share fascinating knowledge about the local wildlife and ecology, with topics such as “The Secret Life of the Cloud Forest” or “The Chocó as a Center of Biodiversity.” To end your day, you can embark on a night walk to discover the wildlife of the forest, where you may observe nocturnal creatures like frogs, snakes, insects, and even tarantulas. A unique experience that will deepen your connection with the nature around you.
Begin your day with a scenic hike along the Howler Monkey Trail, which winds through an ancient forest filled with diverse plant and animal life, including the renowned copal tree. As you trek through this lush landscape, your expert guide will point out any wildlife that makes an appearance—from vibrant tropical birds to elusive howler monkeys—while sharing insights about the forest’s ecosystem and ongoing conservation efforts.
Your hike will lead you to the lodge’s Life Center, a research facility dedicated to studying the region’s native plants and wildlife. Here, you’ll have the chance to observe butterflies up close, following their fascinating life cycle from eggs to their fully developed, winged forms. The center also offers a serene retreat where you can unwind on the spacious wooden deck, taking in the breathtaking views, or meditate among the surrounding gardens, home to fruit-bearing trees such as banana, plantain, cacao, coffee, and wild raspberries, along with manioc and hot chili peppers.
After returning to the lodge, take a moment to relax—perhaps with a soothing massage or a soak in the Jacuzzi at the wellness center. Around noon, lunch will be served, followed by a leisurely break before the next adventure.
In the afternoon, embark on a trek along the Cucharillo Trail, named after a native Ecuadorian tree that has become endangered due to its valuable timber. This moderately challenging hike offers a profound lesson in sustainability while rewarding you with breathtaking views of a majestic waterfall, a rocky riverbed, and picturesque pools and smaller cascades at the trail’s end.
As dusk falls, the cloud forest undergoes a magical transformation. The symphony of croaking frogs, calling night birds, and humming insects fills the air. If you switch off your flashlight, you’ll witness the flickering glow of fireflies and may even catch a glimpse of bioluminescent fungi, known as foxfire or fairy fire, illuminating the forest floor. Look up, and you might spot the rustling branches of kinkajous—small, raccoon-like creatures—navigating the treetops in search of fruit.
End your extraordinary day back at the lodge with a delicious dinner, reminiscing about your encounters with the wonders of the cloud forest.
At the break of dawn, the cloud forest comes alive with the melodies of countless birds as they set out in search of food. Early risers eager to witness this spectacular display can do so from the lodge’s terrace, where expert guides will be on hand to point out the incredible variety of bird species that inhabit the area. With a warm cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in hand, you can fully immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the forest. This activity begins at 6:30 AM and lasts for an hour, leaving plenty of time to enjoy a hearty breakfast before preparing for checkout.
Afterward, your private guide will take you to the renowned Hacienda San Agustín de Callo in the Cotopaxi region. This historic estate captivates visitors with its rich archaeological significance, beautifully adorned rooms featuring fireplaces that warm the bathrooms, and artistically painted walls. In the central courtyard, llamas roam freely, eagerly awaiting their lunchtime treat of carrots. Lush gardens frame breathtaking views of Cotopaxi towering in the distance. However, what truly sets this Andean hacienda apart is the remarkable Inca site upon which it stands, offering a rare glimpse into the past and making your visit an unforgettable experience.
After a delicious breakfast, prepare for a spectacular encounter with the imposing Cotopaxi, whose snowy and icy mantle makes it one of the most breathtaking views in Ecuador. This volcano, with its towering presence, has been the protagonist of many eruptions throughout history and is the central point of the Central Sierra landscapes.
Located within Cotopaxi National Park, the surrounding area is full of natural beauty. In its vast plains, you might see wild horses grazing peacefully or gathering near the serene Limpiopungo Lake. This experience, surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes, will surely awaken your love for nature.
In the afternoon, enjoy a charming horseback ride around the hacienda, where the sight of glaciers and snow-capped volcanoes is simply stunning. The trail will take you through a central valley surrounded by mountains, making this ride a truly memorable experience.
Today, we will embark on a beautiful two-hour road trip through the majestic western Andes mountain range, one of the most stunning regions of Ecuador. Our first stop will be the picturesque village of Zumbahua, where around 40 families live surrounded by a landscape full of color and life.
Just ten kilometers away, you will find the impressive Quilotoa Lake, a volcanic crater whose waters reflect vibrant shades of blue and green. This landscape, framed by towering snow-capped volcanoes, will leave you speechless. After enjoying a peaceful walk to the lake’s edge, you’ll have the opportunity to savor a delicious traditional lunch, all while taking in the unmatched views.
After this special moment, we will return to Quito, ready for the next stage of your adventure.
Today, your unforgettable journey through the Galápagos Islands begins, one of the most incredible natural spectacles in the world. Early in the morning, we will escort you to the national airport to board your flight to the breathtaking Galápagos Islands (approximately 2.5 hours). Upon landing, a representative from Pikaia will greet you and escort you from the VIP lounge to the boats that will take you to Pikaia Lodge.
After checking in, enjoy a delicious lunch at the lodge’s Evolution Restaurant or on the poolside terrace. The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax and familiarize yourself with the lodge’s facilities. We recommend taking a walk, jogging, cycling along the lodge’s trails, or swimming in the pool. This afternoon is also a great opportunity to meet the resident tortoises that live on the grounds.
Savor a complimentary welcome cocktail at the DNA Bar while listening to a briefing about the week’s activities and the special features of Pikaia Lodge and the Galápagos Islands. After dinner, you can enjoy a screening of Sir David Attenborough’s documentary on the Galápagos in the Explorers Lounge if you wish to learn more about this unique archipelago.
Today, your adventure begins aboard the Pikaia I yacht, an exclusive cruise through the archipelago that will take you to discover the magic of the islands. From the start, private cabins will be assigned for your comfort, and you can choose to have breakfast as you sail towards your first destination.
The morning will take us to Plaza Sur Island, where you’ll have the option to explore on foot or enjoy fascinating snorkeling in its crystal-clear waters. At noon, a delicious buffet lunch with authentic Ecuadorian cuisine will be served as we continue our journey to Seymour Norte Island. This site is home to a rich variety of wildlife, such as sea lions, marine turtles, hammerhead sharks, and the adorable land and marine iguanas. You’ll also observe colonies of frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies in their natural habitat.
Later, enjoy a stroll on the stunning Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz Island, where you can walk along the soft white sand, surrounded by lava formations and black lagoons. You’ll have the opportunity to see Pacific green sea turtles, flamingos, lava gulls, Sally Lightfoot crabs, and small harmless sharks approaching the shore.
Before sunset, the yacht will set sail back to Pikaia Lodge. As you sail, you can relax in your private cabins, enjoy the views, and take in the comforts of the yacht to end this day filled with unforgettable moments.
If the weather permits, we’ll begin the day with a land tour of the charming Santa Cruz Island, exploring some of its serene beaches. In this tranquil setting, you’ll witness a variety of marine species, such as white-tipped reef sharks and schools of golden-spotted rays swimming gracefully in the crystal-clear waters.
Our next stop will be one of the most visited gems of the Galápagos Islands: the Charles Darwin Research Station, an international center dedicated to the study and conservation of the unique biodiversity of this archipelago, located just outside Puerto Ayora. Here, you’ll have the chance to learn about the fascinating geology, climate, and natural history of the islands. The station is also renowned for its conservation efforts and the Fausto Llerena Turtle Breeding Center, a space dedicated to the protection of the famous Galápagos giant tortoises.
These impressive creatures can live up to 200 years and weigh between 250 and 300 kg. The tortoises residing in this center are so accustomed to visitors that you’ll have the opportunity to take photos with them and learn how your visit can contribute to the conservation of these unique species.
If you prefer a more relaxed day, you can also enjoy the lodge at your own pace. You’ll have access to mountain bikes, helmets, snorkeling gear, and wetsuits free of charge. If you wish to add additional activities, such as excursions or renting specialized equipment, be sure to book in advance. Please note that some external activities may have an additional cost.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast aboard the Pikaia I yacht, your exploration day begins on Bartolomé Island. This island is a true natural spectacle, with a landscape that feels otherworldly, shaped by volcanic formations like lava bombs, splashes, and ash cones. Together, we’ll hike to the top of the island to marvel at panoramic views of the nearby islands, Sullivan Bay, and the iconic Pinnacle Rock.
If snorkeling is your thing, this will be the perfect place for you. The calm waters surrounding Pinnacle Rock are home to an astonishing marine life, perfect for swimming alongside fascinating creatures. You might even be lucky enough to spot the small and agile Galápagos penguins gliding through the water, accompanied by white-tipped reef sharks resting peacefully under the sun.
In the afternoon, we’ll head to Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island, where you’ll be amazed by unique lava formations and vegetation flourishing around the volcanoes. The coastline of the bay is adorned with lava cactus, while the volcanic landscapes create a stunning contrast between ancient lava flows and more recent ones, formed during a 19th-century eruption. After exploring this fascinating environment, you’ll have the refreshing opportunity to swim or snorkel alongside the playful sea lions that inhabit the area.
As you bid farewell to the wonders of the Galápagos, you’ll have one last chance to admire its landscapes as you board your flight from Baltra Island Airport back to the Ecuadorian mainland. Here, you will begin your trek on the “Camino Real.” It will be a few hours of hiking today before reaching your first lodge, the Salkantay Lodge and Adventure Resort in Soraypampa.
Salkantay Lodge takes its name from the majestic peak at the head of the valley, Mt. Salkantay. Eternally topped with a covering of snow, Salkantay’s 20,600-foot summit is the highest in the region, and is often obscured by the swirling clouds that rise from the jungle. For the Incas, it was one of the most sacred mountains. You’ll be given a charming Peruvian welcome to the lodge before enjoying dinner.
Sleep overnight at the lodge, which – at 12,690 feet – is a good place to acclimatize to the thinner air.
Today is all about rest and relaxation in the breathtakingly beautiful Humantay Lake, only half an hour from the lodge. This blissful four-hour excursion will be a leisurely way to enjoy the landscape before an evening at the lodge. Take a dip in the outdoor Jacuzzi, and prepare for the next few days of rigorous hiking.
Today, the challenge begins! Your adventure has a mesmerizing start, as you begin the trek with the sunrise illuminating the Andean peaks. Hike to the Rio Blanco valley, circling Humantay Peak across from the summit of Salkantay. Once we reach the highest point on the trek, Salkantay Pass, we’ll take a break. At 15,213 feet, the views from here are glorious. The white-hatted Vilcabamba Range extends in every direction and the glacial south face of Salkantay towers above. Be on alert for Andean condors zooming by; these majestic birds are often seen soaring around the rocky ledges.
From the pass, we’ll descend toward Wayra Lodge, our destination for the night. ‘Wayra’ means wind, and references the nearby Wayracmachay, literally the “place where the wind lives.” Hikers will be given ample sustenance, with a hot picnic lunch served en route and dinner at the lodge.
Being your morning with breakfast at Wayra Lodge before continuing the descent along the left bank of the Salkantay River. The further you plunge, the more verdant the scenery becomes. As the warm air from the jungle rises to envelop you, so do the colorful creatures that thrive in warmer climes: intricately patterned butterflies flutter through the air and attractive orchids can be seen spurting up from the ground.
The destination for today is Colpa Lodge, a charming lodge set on an open plateau at the confluence of three rivers. Once we get there, you and your fellow hungry hikers can fill up on Pachamanca – a traditional Peruvian meal made by layering meat and vegetables with hot stones and cooking them in a covered earthen pit. After, you might want to soothe your shaky calves with a soak in the outdoor Jacuzzi and enjoy the panoramic views. Or, should you crave something a little more active, you can ramble along the nearby orchid trail. Dinner will be at the lodge.
Today, your luxury Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu continues, hiking across the more populated Santa Teresa River valley. You’ll see evidence of how local valley dwellers make their living. As you pass through plantations, you may even see the community members tending their crops of banana, granadilla, avocado, and coffee. Caffeine enthusiasts may be interested to know that some of the best organic coffees in the world are produced in this very valley!
Come lunchtime, we’ll find a suitable spot to stop by the river and refuel with a hot picnic. After lunch, get moving again for another hour or so until a private vehicle comes to collect us for a quick 30-minute transfer to the beginning of the Llactapata Inca Trail.
Tucked into the mountainside among a lush avocado orchard is our next overnight stop: the Lucma Lodge which will provide dinner and rest before the finale of your trek: Machu Picchu.
Today you’ll tackle the last day of your trek. The first few hours will be an uphill slog toward Llactapata Pass which gifts travelers with a first look at Machu Picchu in the distance. From this vantage point, you’ll see the site looming from the southeast.
After gazing at the ruins, take some time out to check out the Llactapata ruins, which were also “discovered” by Hiram Bingham on that fateful expedition in 1911. The site, which was recently restored, looks better than ever. Sit down for lunch at a scenic outlook that offers views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains.
Once lunch concludes, begin your descent towards the Urubamba River, passing through several picturesque landscapes comprised of bamboo forests, orchards, and plantations. From here, you’ll ride the train to Aguas Calientes, the closest settlement to Machu Picchu and your final overnight destination before exploring Machu Picchu properly tomorrow. Celebrate your completion of the Salkantay Trail over an indulgent dinner.
Today will be a day that remains permanently etched in your mind, long after you’ve returned from your personalized trip to Peru, for today will be the day you finally set eyes on the storied city of Machu Picchu!
After an early breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide and begin the bus ride up switchbacks to the Lost Citadel. As you trek up the entrance’s stone steps, heavy foliage hides the surrounding views until you emerge at what seems like the top of the world, with Machu Picchu spread out below. Take in the wonder of this historic, sacred site, relishing in your accomplishment of trekking the valley below. Return to Aguas Calientes for a late lunch, before heading back to your return train to Ollantaytambo.
Today, you will explore the ancient town of Ollantaytambo, one of the few remaining places in Peru that retains its original Incan urban planning. You’ll note still-functioning street canals, multi-family houses with secret interior courtyards and iconic Incan trapezoidal doors! Here we’ll visit the Incan fortress perched on the mountainside overlooking the sleepy pueblo, and learn about nearby stone quarries and the pivotal Incan battle fought here.
We hope you worked up an appetite this morning, because next on the schedule is a true Peruvian feast: the traditional Pachamanca! The centuries-old Pachamanca tradition involves marinating lamb, pork, chicken, and potatoes in a variety of Andean ingredients and cooking them to perfection in an underground oven. You’ll witness each step of the process: how the oven is prepared, how white-hot stones are layered, and how the feast materializes before your eyes!
While waiting for your feast to roast, make sure to wander through the grounds’ organic garden, smell the fresh-roasted coffee produced by the farm’s head roaster, and sample some of the varieties of cañazo (a local Andean spirit) that are produced on-site at the one-of-a-kind distillery.
At the end of your meal, we will bring you back to Cusco for a final evening at leisure.
This morning, you can continue your exploration of the city of Cusco, or have a lie-in and enjoy the comforts of your hotel! At the appropriate time early this afternoon, we will bring you to the Cusco airport for your return flight to Lima. Your Kuoda Lima host will meet you upon arrival and bring you to the Huaca Pucllana site.
Here, you will glimpse pre-Columbian desert ruins, delicately preserved in the middle of Miraflores, one of Lima’s nicest neighborhoods. The huaca, or sacred site, is home to one of Lima’s finest dining establishments where you can enjoy a gourmet meal featuring Peruvian flavors while looking out over some of Lima’s most cherished ruins.
Upon conclusion of your meal, we will bring you to the Lima airport for your journey home. Thank you for traveling with Kuoda Travel, and buen viaje!
