From Sacsayhuaman, we will take a short detour to the archaeological site of Q’enqo.  “Qenqo” is a Quechua word meaning“Labyrinth” and was coined by the Spanish for its labyrinthine underground galleries and small zigzag carved canals true to this site.

CUSCO CITY TOUR – PLACES VISITED IN DETAIL:

QORIKANCHA

The convent was built on the spectacular Qorikancha gold square, the most important dedicated place for worshiping of the sun, whose walls were covered with gold sheets. The convent stands on a base of polished stone structures, the most finely crafted in Cusco, the Inca Empire. Its gate is an excellent representative of the Renaissance and its unique baroque tower stands out from the city’s rooftops. As all churches here, it includes an important collection of paintings from the Cusquenian School of Art.

PRINCIPAL SQUARE OF CUSCO– PLAZA DE ARMAS

In our visit to the main square we will introduce you to the cathedral of Cusco. We will be walking through the main streets such as The stone of the 12 angles and many other typical walls, palaces and buildings of the Inka era that are still well preserved.

SACSAYHUAMAN

An imposing example of Inca military architecture, this fortress was built by using large granite slabs and dedicated to safeguarding the city from attacks by invaders from the east or Antis.  Sacsayhuaman (in Quechua “satisfied falcon”) is made up of three large terraces that overlap in a “zigzag” pattern and are flanked by huge stone walls up to 300 meters high.

Q`ENQO

Located four kilometers northeast of Cusco, there is Qenqo – ritual center built on a unique limestone outcrop, with underground galleries and a semicircular amphitheater with the archaeological groups of Q’enqo Grande and Q’enqo Chico. It represents a labyrinth or zigzag, fulfilling a purely religious function, being on the outside as a semicircular amphitheater with mysterious trapezoidal windows.

MERCADO DE SAN PEDRO

The local San Pedro market is one of the oldest in Cusco, founded in 1925 and is still the largest concentration point for the supply of essential materials for Cusco residents and visitors. A visit  to this market is, without a doubt,  a fascinating intercultural experience where you can listen to the Quechua language, see gestures and habits common in Andean culture, and feel the mixture of smells of local products and flowers. Finally see handmade garments and some places, where they are made, in a typical traditional way.
